Kanosuke distillery (嘉之助蒸溜所) is located along the west coast of Kagoshima, right by the sea. While Kanosuke is young, having been established around 2017, its parent company, Komasa Jyozo (小正醸造) has been producing traditional liquors and spirits like like the famous Mellowed Kozuru shochu since 1883. This unique heritage can be glimpsed from certain fermentation and distillation techniques adapted from shochu making, together with readily available shochu and other interesting casks for aging, resulting in fresh yet mellow flavor profiles. In addition, the hot maritime climate of kagoshima adds to the precociousness of Kanosuke's whiskies, which have knockout ABVs at cask-strength, and yet are more mature and complex than other Japanese whiskies of equivalent age. Kanosuke's early vintages, and especially their single casks, have shown huge promise and collectibility, while the upcoming collaborations with Diageo will ensure widespread distribution and marketing. Kanosuke's star is indeed rising!
This cask-strength, highly anticipated (in 2021) First Edition of Kanosuke Single Malt was aged for 3 years mainly in ex-Mellowed Kozuru shochu casks.
